FAQs

How do you choose the NGOS you feature on the website?

We select NGOS that we have visited or worked with.  We also ask our subscribers to suggest NGOs and once we screen them, we include them on our site as well.

Why do you only feature NGOs that involve women?

Actually, we are interested in NGOs involving women and their families.  We believe that women have been relegated to second class citizenship in the developing world.  Female empowerment is the best development strategy we know.

We have learned that women in the developing world use whatever resources they can find to support their families, while men often use additional resources for alcohol, cards and gambling. So, helping women means helping the whole family and community.

How do you differ from other web sites that promote women's NGOs in the developing world?

1. Most large web sites such as Global Fund for Women, Global Giving, or Kiva put your contribution in a pool and then distribute funds to different groups. We want you to decide exactly where you contribute.

2 Most large web sites use a portion of your contribution (usually around 15%) to support their own maintenance.  We don't ask for any money for our NGOs or ourselves.  Your contribution, if you make one, is strictly up to you.

How does Women's Giving Tree compare to Nicholas Kristof's and Sheryl WuDunn's Half the Sky movement?

Women's Giving Tree is similar to the Half the Sky movement but we only feature NGOs we know personally or have screened personally.  Also, we try to put you in touch with the NGO's leaders and organization.

Will I be able to make contributions through www.womensgivingtree.org?

No, Women's Giving Tree will not handle any money. We will simply inform you how to go about making contributions if you wish to do so.

Will you arrange for me to work for NGOs around the world?

No, we will put you in touch with NGOs you are interested in and you will have to arrange a working – and volunteer – relationship with the NGO’s leaders.  It is not always easy to arrange a work relationship, but when you do, the experience is intensely rewarding.

Who are your subscribers?

We welcome anyone who is interested in NGOs that help women.  It is free to sign up as a subscriber and it is easy to unsubscribe if the subscriber wishes to stop receiving emails.

Is there any obligation if I join your email list?

None whatsoever.

Will you deluge me with emails?

No, emails will come only once a month.

Will my name and/or email be shared with anyone else?

No, we never share our subscribers' information, under any circumstances.
